Success Stories - A loss of 89 pounds.....

Hi!!! Just me,

Wondering what everyones doing these days to stay in shape and healthy. I'm jogging during commercial, I just don't enjoy walking in this cold weather here in Michigan. I still walk twice around the track with the Kindergarten classes, Monday through Friday. Not all the parapro do this but most do. If we expect the children do this, then we must set a good example. I enjoy chatting and singing with them. We get into some interesting conversation once in awhile too.

Just want you to know that I'm still around and doing well...

Been out riding my bike just about everyday. The cool weather here in Michigan has been ideal for it.

I went to Wisconsin for three weeks to visit with my sister. She used to be my walking buddy when she lived here in Michigan. We road bikes and went swimming in their town pool. I love swimming as well. School starts again soon and summer will turn to fall, but walking will be even more beautiful then.

Patients with fever and neutropenia who are at low risk for developing complications (neutropenia expected to persist for less than 10 days, no comorbid complications requiring hospitalization, and cancer adequately treated) can be treated with oral antibiotic regimens, such as ciprofloxacin, 750 mg every 12 hours, plus amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, 500 mg every 8 hours. In the organ transplant patient with interstitial infiltrates, the main concern is infection with Pneumocystis or Legionella species, so that empiric treatment with a macrolide and TMP-SMZ would be reasonable. If the patient does not respond to empiric treatment, a decision must be made to add more antimicrobial agents or perform invasive procedures (see above) to make a specific diagnosis. By making a specific diagnosis, therapy can be specific and polypharmacy with multiple potentially toxic agents can be avoided.

Walking Gear - Shoes

Hi Everyone,

IrishDode here and I'm new. I really would like to get some help with my problem and be able to do lots of walking. I am about 100# overweight and I have been doing pool exercises. I would love to be able to walk. Unfortunately, it hurts my back, I get pain in my shins, and my feet hurt. I have trouble shopping in a store for more than about 15 minutes. I know I need to do this. Everyone tells me to walk. All the articles say "walk." I don't want it to sound like I'm making excuses..I would love to go out walking.
What can I do to get walking? Any help would be immensely appreciated.

Walking Routes - Winter Walking Ideas

Never walked at any of those places before, but I have heard they had wonderful trails. As for walking on ice, I just won't do it. Fell once and broke my wrist so don't do a lot of walking outside right now......

I have the Melt-It-Off cd and it's great. It has a ten minute workout that's wonderful when you don't have an hour to workout. It also has three, one hour workouts that I do during the week, when I make time for an hour of exercising. I can hardy wait for warmer weather so that I can get back out there. I love walking and now I even power walk.

I just feel so much better when I do. I'm still keeping a log and seeing that helps me stay focused on my needs and goals.

Success Stories - A loss of 89 pounds.....

Hi!!! Where is everyone?

My plan to exercise everyday is going well. I find myself very deticated to doing the ten minute cd but not so mush the others. It's the first thing I do every morning and sometimes in the evening. I haven't started walking outdoors yet. I heard that the weather might climb up into the 30's tomorrow so maybe I'll try going. I worry a lot about falling since I broke my wrist a few years ago. I was just pulling children around with a slid, on a very icy/snowy playground and you can probably guess the rest. hehehe

Becareful out there, walkingBarbie

Helpful Tips - Winter Walking

Outside vs Treadmill.....

I find myself exercising more inside this time of year. I'm lucky I work in a elementary school so I can stay after school to power walk the halls.

I bought a new cd called Melt-it-off and it has a good ten minute work out, that I try to do everyday. The cd also offers three different one hour work outs. I've been try to do one of those every other day to keep some variety. To be very honest with you, winter is a very difficult time for me and I can hardly wait for spring to be here. I know I'm not the only person to feel this way and I won't be the last.....

Success Stories - A loss of 89 pounds.....

Happy 2009!!! to everyone.....

I have gain 4 pounds back over the holidays but I know I shall take them off soon. Until the weather gets warmer, I have a ten minute exercise cd that I plan to use everyday. It also has three different hour workouts that I'll try using two or three days a week. I'm writing down everytime I use them so that I will see them adding up and hopefully see better results. Walking is my favorite form of exercise, it gets me out of the house and into the fresh air. I can hardly wait for better weather.....

Walking Routes - Neighborhood Walking

Rail trails are great places to walk. I live in the country and our roads are scary to walk as vehicles go so fast, no sidewalks and gravel flies! I have one acre and I am considering, as part of getting started, to stomp around my acre for the winter, walk around my school - inside or out - weather permitting for my lunch hour and then 'somewhere' as an event on the weekend. I don't really want a partner, I do better walking alone or with my dogs. Nor anti-social but more task oriented. Rail trails in Bay City and Tobico Marsh are great places. Chippewa Nature Center in Midland has great trails and they have a rail trail that goes from Midland to Clare, very nice trail, you can stop in Sandford and swim! In Saginaw, I love Green Point Nature Center at the South/West end of town at the end of Maple St. just off of Michigan. (I work one mile from there and plan to walk after work when its light again then, sigh.)

Walking Routes - Winter Walking Ideas

I wanted a place to share winter walking ideas, so please feel free to share yours.
**************************************************************

I work in an elementary school during those very cold windy days. We have this super long hallway and a gym that works perfect. I'll work the hallway and then go inside the gym where I'll walk once around the outer walls. I'll return to the hall and repeat this. I get my walking in and stay warm.

Hi!!! leftygrlac, the place that you wrote about sounds like my kind of place. I love to walk by water. My favorite place is also by water. I often walk along the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan, since I only live four miles away. We are lucky to lives in a state with so many wonderful places to walk.

Success Stories - Trying to Find Time

Hi!!! I'm finally able to post again, so I'm getting caught up today. I'd like to know how your father's doing and if you had a talk with your employer, to find time for walking during the day. That was a great idea. I'm not able to do that so walking right after work. Then I go home, make dinner, eat light, and don't have to worry about going back out. The days are getting shorter now and it gets dark much earlier so it works great.

I would also like to add, that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time. I have been through this with my own parents and it wasn't easy. In fact I didn't have anytime for me, but I wouldn't have changed that time spent with them, to make time for myself either. Spend time with them while you can, you won't regret it.....

Walking Routes - Stress free walking.....

Hi!!! I didn't see a users name on your post, but who ever you are I'm glad that I can be of help to you. The area that I wrote about is my favorite place to walk and I'm out there just about every day. Right now the leaves are changing color and I'm enjoying it so much. The other day it was windy and several acorns fell hitting me right in the head. "Ouch!" So watch out for falling acorn, they're everywhere.....

Walking Gear - Walking and shin splints

I know the original question is almost 1 yr old, but in case anyone else has the same question....

It may sound silly, but from years of selling running, hiking, and walking shoes I have found that most people have one of two issues. 1) they don't stretch out before they walk. Stretching your calf before you walk can help immensely. It can be as easy as laying a piece of 2x4 on the ground and putting the ball of your foot on it and lean forward. 2) and this is the silly one. People that sleep on their stomachs are more likely to get shin splints. This is due to the fact that your feet generally lie flat on the mattress and your calf is tight for the entire night. This also causes heal pain when you wake in the moring. So....stretch.....a lot. Hope it helps!

To answer your questions, it takes the average individual about 2,000 steps to equal one mile. Most pedometers let you set your "stride" to compensate for any differences in your stride. However, your probably safe figuring on about 2,000 steps per mile.

Here's a link to a site where you can find the other information you are looking for: http://www.dalesnaturalfoods.net/common/adam/HealthTools.asp?storeID=886C68BFA9A64A13BF3B2132B6338345

There are several "health calculators" that will help you determine how many calories your body currently needs, how many you burn at various activities, and more. Good luck!

Helpful Tips - FORUM RULES: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

This is my first time to post and I have a question that I
would like to have answered. How many steps, at an average
stride, does it take to travel a mile? If anyone could also help
me with a calorie question, I would also appreciate it. How
many calories do you burn in a mile and could you help me with
a formula for the number of calories for a 5'6" male...160lb.
to maintain that weight? Thanks J.D.C.

Helpful Tips - Intervals

There's been a lot in the news lately about using "intervals" while walking. Basically, some doctors are recommending that you walk as fast as you can for 30 seconds, then slow down to recover, then walk as fast as you can again, etc.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does it really burn fat and help you lose weight more quickly? I've never done it - I just warmup and get up to the quickest pace possible and keep it for however long I'm walking. I've lost 190 pounds doing that, but if doing intervals will help me get the last 60 off more quickly, I'm willing to try it.

How about you, Jodi? Did you ever use intervals?

Helpful Tips - Music

Here's a bit of my set list and they have great beats for a good walking speed for me...also, they're mostly from the 80's.

The Fixx "One Thing Leads to Another"

{I start EVERY walk with this song, because of the beat, but also because of the lyric - one thing -footstep - leads to another.)

Frankie goes to Hollywood "Relax"
Squeeze "Tempted"
Duran Duran "Rio"
Cascada "Big Bad Love"
Cascada "Shut Up"
Laura Branigan "Gloria"
Sheena Easton "Telephone"
Dexie's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen"
Rick Springfield "Don't Talk to Strangers" or "Jesse's Girl"
Toni Basil "Mickey"

Cool Down:
Air Supply "Making Love out of nothing at all"

[Cascada is amazing and really euro-tech! All of her songs have the same beat and the song titles are really simple to find on iTunes.)

Enjoy!

Walking Routes - Stress free walking.....

Thanks to John and Waliing Barbie, I'm walking again. I found a new housing development that I can walk through each day. There are three huge uphills and then (happily) three huge downhills. Also, another thing I look for is automatic sprinklers - I just walk right though! There is no traffic (or very little) and it remains a safe place, as the woods are off of the road. Thanks for the inspiration!
