Vital Vitamin D

Monday, November 30, 2009

Judy writes: My doctor and my friend's doctor recently told us (separately) that we were low in Vitamin D. Seems like I've been hearing that from a lot of people lately. Without getting too much sun, what's the best way to absorb Vitamin D and which foods are highest in it?

Dear Judy,
It is always better to get nutrients from foods – the way nature intended.

Vitamin D is made in the body and has multiple roles.  It helps deposit calcium in your bones and helps protect against bone disease by keeping bones strong.  Some good Vitamin D food sources are: canned salmon, fortified milk, fortified orange juice, and fortified cereals.

Just a few minutes of sun three times a week can help the body activate Vitamin D in the skin.
